I got down and intimate with the soil on Friday. With the weather perfect, the garden boxes finished, and Abbie down for a nap, I was able to transfer some compost and plant to my hearts content. This is only a preliminary garden view, as the final touches were half way put in yesterday. Mick and I spent the day, outside with the girls, weeding like we were setting a new world record. Wait, I think we did set one. So many weeds!!! You can see them in all their pre-pulled glory. Little did they know we had it out for them.
As I was working yesterday, I couldn't help but remember a specific lecture I had in my Natural Resource Policy and Economics class. How, according to my professor, I would be called the dominating impact, as I struggled to turn nature to my way. I was going to have control. I needed dominion over my space, and by golly, I was going to get it! Weeds need to be eradicated. Clean lines a must. Order in where and what I planted. Chop seedlings down, they cause shade, and besides, I don't want them seeding in my garden. Such audacity!
I have never considered myself a person who needs dominion over nature- but I did it, even without hesitation. Sometimes, I wish we could appreciate the weeds a little more. Aspen and Liberty do. I am constantly given a bouquet of dandelions. They are a beautiful color filler with tulips, lilac, roses, daffodils, peonies, and many other bounties that nature has to offer in our tiny vases. Perhaps we are afraid of their invasion. I know I am.
