Skate Date at the Park

The girls and I got ice skates for Christmas. Mom found them at a rink surplus sale for $5 a pair. Who knows how many feet have placed their stinky selves in them, but we don't care. The bonus is that others were able to break the leather right in for us. Thank you fellow ice skating lovers- no blisters for me!

Luckily with the frozen tundra weather we are experiencing this year, Merlin Olsen Park down on east Center St. was able to open for public skating. Logan City does do a few things right every once in a while. Props to the the RAPZ tax fund for helping fund mother natures ice. I must give them credit for using their money wisely this time. Not often are things free in this world, but outdoor skating at the park under the Temple lights is free if you have your own skates. Only $3.00 to rent.

Skating in the park brings a little magic back into the bitter cold of winter. I have missed the days of skating at Utah Lake. Often I forget I have had some of the best jobs in the world, one of which was working at the Rink during the winter season. With the smell of the frozen lake nearby, the sweeping sound of the Zamboni cutting, then laying a new thin layer of ice, lacing up my skates in anticipation of a little wind in my hair. Oh, the days! I'm happy to be reliving them, even if it is absent a lake view, a pad of ice to be the first to mark up, and slightly less agility and balance. At least we've got the park with a Temple view.

We have been taking full advantage of the crisp air, perfect ice and free skating in order not go slightly stir crazy this winter. When it is not a red air day (yes, we have the worst air quality in the nation- boo!), we jump at the chance to get out.  Here are a few shots of Aspen and I's skate date. She had her birthday camera in her pocket, so I offered to hold it before it broke, and in the mean time snapped a few photos.

She told me she was "born to skate" and that she thinks that it is her "passion in life". I think she picked up on a hint of the magic. That's my girl!
