Fathers' Day Weekend

Fathers' Day weekend was one of three weekends for the summer of 09' where the NPS (National Park Service) was granting free entry into all parks, monuments and preserves. My ultimate goal was to get Mick and the girls and I out to one of the many National Parks or Monuments where a) we have not been, and b) made the "free" opportunity worth it, and c) was close enough to not cost an arm and a leg!

I wanted Craters of the Moon because I hear the lava tubes are a treat not to be missed, and the camping is easy. This desire came from my love of all things caves which I have not participated in for many years. I wanted a little taste although lava tubes are nothing like caves, so I hear. We ended up not going- surprise! Too far away, trucks been acting up, camping with a toddler... the excuses went on and on. But soon, soon I will get to a real cave and bask in the coolness and smell of earth that only a cave can produce. It is by far the best smell in the universe! I know, I'm weird. But it's a natural attraction for me, like hydrogen to oxygen. It's my instinct to return. Possibly Craters of the Moon would not have scratched that itch anyway- who knows.

So we choice destination b.
A day at the Dinosaur Park in Ogden and a stint at the Marriot, complete with a pool!

Where Abbie enjoyed meeting her temporary twin,

and Aspen and Liberty enjoyed the pool.

The clouds burst buckets of rain the Saturday we went to the park, but we had fun anyway.
We saw rainbow trout the size of the great country of China- honestly they were HUGE! It made me wish for a fishing pole, but we fed them some sort of pellets instead.
Skeletons of raptors
A woolly Rhino replica, that we were most likely not supposed to be touching. Who knew these existed? Definitely not me! I think I've found my favorite kind of "Dinosaur".

Abbie rode a dino, had giant frog fears and played in a dinosaurs head and eyeball socket. She did not want to get back in the stroller after such freedom!

We walked around to see the dinosaurs in their 'natural habitat'. These suckers were huge and not at all their actual size. Scary!
My, what big teeth you have.

Good times at the Dinosaur Park in Ogden Utah! They have a museum that is top notch and so interesting. I loved all the fossils!

  1. I have driven by Craters of the Moon probably a dozen times, but never stopped except to use the bathroom once. I had no idea it had caves! I wanted to take the kids to the Shoshone Caves by Twin Falls a couple weeks ago, but that didn't work out. If you ever do go to the Craters of the Moon, let me know because it's only 2 hours from my house, and we'd join you for the day!
My kids love the Ogden Dino Park! I'm so glad you guys went and had such a great time, despite the weather! The photos turned out great, and it looks like you had fun!!!
Oh, and Abbie's twin was sure cute too!!!

  2. That looks like so much fun! We were debating about going there last month when we went to the zoo, but Tyson was worried that the dinosaurs would be too scary. You know what a scaredy pants he is, huh! Cute pictures though!

  3. Kala, that would be fun to do a meeting at the Craters of the moon. I will for sure let you know. Tell me about Shoshone Caves when you go. Would love to visit those too. I think I might have to have a caving summer one of these years!

Kim, you should go, it is an awesome park!
