Okay, so maybe it is not a grassroots movement that I've begun, since it is still in the seed coating stage with heavy competition thus far, but I may be getting through to some officials in regards to my particular park strip debate.
I was able to talk with the UDOT(Utah Department of Transportation) District 1 Permit Director. Before he had a chance to realize that I was a citizen, rather than a city employee seeking to discover if a permit had been granted, he told me he hadn't had any requests come in from Logan and that none had been approved for such a venture along SR30 (the state highway on which I live that falls within Logan City limits). You see, Logan City needs a permit from UDOT to remove my park strip concrete because it is not city property, but UDOT easement land. This is the loop hole I'm trying to use to my advantage in keeping my driveway more accessible.
Before he referred all citizen or public issues over to the Public Relations Officer, I was able to inform him of the city's plans to decrease accessibility to my home in a safe manor, and I kindly asked him not to approve such a permit if it is requested. I also informed him that I was not the only concerned citizen on my street. He was actually an official who took time to listen to me. I appreciated his non bureaucratic ear. I was thankful to have had the opportunity to propose my side of the issue to the man who signs the papers!
Next I spoke with the Public Relations Officer. Coincidentally he lived in Logan up until 2 months ago, and he knew all about the park strip debate. I even detected a slight tone of disgust as he mentioned it. He informed me that he was very interested in this case and that he would be following up with me after he did some investigating with Logan City. My orange X's were mentioned and he said that I was allowed to ask to see the supposed permit if anyone comes to rip out my concrete.
I feel more at peace knowing that I have people in my corner who are investing time in me as a tax paying single family dweller who abides by the law. There will surely be more to come on my grassroots efforts. Stay tuned!
thanks for watching out for us Jen. Maybe you can get someone to put in a new bridge to our driveway before it's totally gone. : )
