7 going on 21 and Wishing I had My Camera

Had a date with Aspen.
It was good to spend some quality time with her.
I feel like we were once the best of buddies and that somehow time has distanced us.
Where does childhood go?
Why do children grow up so fast and start to distance themselves from their parents?

Oh, yes, I forget this is part of life!
A necessary part.
A sort of independence that as mothers we must nurture in our children, and likely what we demand from them at some point.
A mother can only tie a child's shoe laces so many times before going batty!

I knew this day would come.
But come on, I can't be that embarrassing to pal around with.
Not yet!
Aspen is only 7, and I am a 'pretty hip' mom (according to a facebook quiz)!

So, what's so uncool about holding your moms hand around the Ice Ring anyway?

There were several couples skating , a few arm in arm in some sort of ice waltz.
Swaying then dipping, skipping then extending for one another.
Romance in it's art form.
So, I extended my hand, palm up, with eager fingers, and asked Aspen for a skate.
Sightly blushing, she said "no... mom... I don't want to hold your hand".

Broke my heart for a split second.
But I persevered, skating onward by my lonesome.
In the midst of my heartbreak, I glanced back and saw her ice waltzing.
Yes, ice waltzing!
Glide then reach, hold then dip.

Would have given anything to be that side wall!
One lucky piece of polyurethane!

I suppose we are not too far removed from one another.
She is an obvious romantic like her mother.
The wall was just more cool!

  1. You are one amazing writer. Everything you post is absolutely beautiful! Man I am not ready for the day that I become "uncool." Although I think it's pretty cool you took her on a one on one date iceskating!

  2. I'm with Rani... I do not want a day to come when Fischer decides I'm uncool... no holding hands... I'm starting to tear up just thinking about it!!! That's it, he'll have to stay 3 forever!
    Great post... as usual!
